On May 27, Bird Construction Group was awarded a $42 million contract to build the new performing arts centre. Bird Construction Group was also selected to build Brock University’s Marilyn I. Walker’s School of Fine and Performing Arts, which will be located adjacent to the performing arts centre.
Of the four companies who submitted bids – all of which were under budget – Bird’s bid was the lowest at $36.85 million. With the winning bid coming in at less than what was projected it would cost to erect the facility, the city can now add back some of the aesthetic features and finishes that had been previously trimmed from the project.
“With Council’s unanimous support, we can continue with construction of our Preforming Arts Centre which is a vital component of our downtown revitalization plans,” said St. Catharines Mayor Brian McMullan. “The spotlight will be shining on St. Catharines when the curtain finally rises and we take centre stage in 2015.”
